Destiny 2’s Taken King-Like Big Expansion Will Be Forsaken, out This September

Last night was the big reveal for Year 2 of Destiny 2 and with it came a whole host of information and details on the game’s biggest expansion yet, basically this sequels answer to The Taken King with Forsaken.

Destiny 2: Forsaken will come with a brand new story (hopefully a sizable one), and a brand new Raid in an all-new location by the name of The Dreaming City, which is being described as by the developers “if the Vault of Glass and the Dreadnaught had a baby” and was “raised by Peter Jackson”, if Peter Jackson had a baby in the form of a Destiny 2 Raid, obviously.  Quite interestingly, the new Raid is said to evolve of sorts, with new secrets and challenges being added on a regular basis, so much so that the developers also say that The Dreaming City Raid that you might play at launch, won’t be exactly the same as when you’d play it a few weeks later.

In terms of main story, Forsaken will feature Cayde-6 as the star of its story and after imprisoning the worst kind of scum across the galaxy into the Prison of Elders, those prisoners have escaped and not only do they want to reap havoc upon our galaxy into a lawlessness society like something out of the wild west, but they’re also gunning for Cayde-6 himself.  However, Cayde-6’s pursuit for the eight fugitives is not with the complete blessing of the Vanguard, so he’s sure to rustle some feathers on both sides of the fence.

In total there will be two new destinations to explore with The Dreaming City and The Tangled Shore, as well as a very interesting new multiplayer mode called GambitGambit will be a hybrid 4v4, PvP/PvE mode, where two teams are pitted against one another in two separate arenas.  Players will need to kill enemies and bank points (so to speak) and upon doing so, they will send challenging enemies into the opposing players arena, and that team cannot bank anymore points until that particular enemy is defeated.  Players will also have the opportunity to invade the opposing team’s arena for a short period of time, just to cause further mayhem and disruption.  To me, this mode seems like it will be a lot of fun.

There will also be a host of “quality of life improvements” such as random perks for weapons and improved customisation on mods, the weapon slot system will be revamped, giving you more freedom to loadouts then before.  Masterworks will also be improved, also giving you more freedom to customise to fit your play-style and weapons will grow with you as you level-up, helping you feel more invested in your favourite weapons.

The Light Level will be bumped up to 600, there will be nine, yes NINE additional Supers, including a bad ass Fire Knives Super, and more (as showcased in the video).  Naturally there will also be your usual new Exotic Weapons (check out the Bow and Arrow), Armour and Gear, as well as new story missions, Adventures, Activities and much more.  Oh and extra Vault space, can’t forget the Vault space.

At launch will be various editions, which had some confusion as to what you’ll be getting with the content, but information now seems to be more clarified.  Firstly, to play Forsaken, you will need to not only own the Destiny 2 base game, but you MUST also own its two expansions; Curse of Osiris and Warmind.

To own the base Forsaken content, it will get you all the base content such as the new campaign, missions, weapons, gear, multiplayer features, the Raid, basically everything we’ve already spoke of that you need to play and that will cost you £34.99/$39.99.

Then there’s the Annual Pass, which has caused some confusion.  The Annual Pass is not a season pass and does not give you access to expansions such as Forsaken, to play the Forsaken content, you’ll just need to buy the Forsaken expansion.  The Annual Pass will give players additional bonus rewards during three premium content releases, I imagine much like those special Destiny live-events that seemed to lure you into Eververse.  We don’t know what exact content will be included in the Annual Pass as of yet, other then it “allows you to save money on content”, but further details are to be released soon.  I would take a guess as to say that it could give you instant access to specially themed Exotics, Ornaments, Emotes and more during these three events. Perhaps rather than playing the Eververse lottery to get the items you want or saving up loads of Bright Dust, this Annual Pass will give it to you instantly?  I’m not sure, but all will be revealed soon.

However, we do know that the events will be the Black Armoury during Winter 2018, Joker’s Wild during Spring 2019 and Penumbra during Summer of 2019.  It will also include a Collection’s Book that provides you with a tick-list as to what gear/weapons you own and what you don’t own, and what items you do not have, it will instruct you on how to acquire them.  I can’t find a UK price on the Annual Pass at the time of writing, but in the U.S it will cost $29.99 (so expect it to be about £24.99) as a standalone purchase.  You can buy a bundle with Forsaken and the Annual Pass for £59.99/$69.99.

Additionally, there will also be the Destiny 2: Forsaken Digital Deluxe Edition which includes the base Forsaken expansion, the Annual Pass and some bonus DLC only found in the Digital Deluxe Edition.  Priced at £69.99/$79.99, the Digital Deluxe Edition will feature all the above content, plus a Wrath of Majestic Legendary Bow Ornament, a Dirge Paladin Emblem and a Vestian Ghost Shell.

Finally, all pre-orders of Forsaken, no matter which version you pick up will come with Cayde-6’s Exotic Stash which includes an Ace of Spades Last Hand Exotic Ornament, the Queen of Hearts Exotic Ship, a Standoff Exotic Emote and the Shades of Cayde-6 Armour Shaders.

At launch for Forsaken, PlayStation 4 players will get timed exclusive content with a Strike, one Gear set per class, a new ship and an exotic weapon.  The previous timed exclusive content for Destiny 2 will then be made available for other platforms.

There is also more information to be found in the developer diary video found above, as well as the updated Development Roadmap found below.  Destiny 2: Forsaken will release for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Tuesday, September 4th.  More information on the content, as well as the gameplay debut of the Gambit multiplayer mode will be showcased during E3 over this weekend.
