Divekick, the lovechild of Adam ‘Keits’ Heart and the star of his UFGT8 fighting game tournament last year, has been snapped up by Iron Galaxy Studios. Their earlier works include 3rd Strike: Online Edition and Marvel Vs Capcom Origins, so they have already proved themselves to be invested in fighting games. This is their boldest step in that direction yet, though, as this is far more grassroots than anything they’ve done before.

In their press release, they detail that the game is coming this Spring to Playstation 3, Playstation Vita and PC, and will include a full campaign mode and GGPO-based online play.

Keits, along with his team One True Game Studios, originally Kickstarted the project based on its popularity at the tournament, and somewhere along the way Iron Galaxy decided they had to have a piece of the pie. However, they decided the deal should be kept secret, so One True Game Studios only revealed that they had found a publisher.

Given that Divekick was originally just an elaborate joke on the fact that dive kicks in fighting games are always too strong, getting a console release is quite the victory. Divekick is undoubtedly simple, but looks can be deceiving. There’s definitely some hidden depth to be discovered due to the Kick Factor and headshot systems, which improve or hinder your character’s abilities respectively. That’s not to mention the ability to pick ‘Dive’ mode or ‘Kick’ mode for your character, of which there a quite a few who are all based on fighting game in-jokes. Each different mode gives a stat boost to jumping or kicking.

I hope this project goes down well with the more general public, because it is a real triumph for the community at large.
