Divekick – The Two Button Fighter

Divekick is the upcoming fighter from developers One True Game Studios and Iron Galaxy Studios to be released on PC via Steam Greenlight, Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita. The game is set to be released on all platforms mentioned on August 20th 2013. To put it simply, Divekick is a fighting game with a slightly obscure twist in that it has just one move and uses only two buttons.

After watching the trailer above (if you haven’t, I suggest you do!) you might be asking yourself hundreds (okay, maybe just a few) questions about how the games works and why does one die after just being hit once? After reading about Divekick for the first time I asked myself these exact same questions and to be honest, the answer is far from extravagant.

The gameplay evolves around a move in created in fighting games know as the ‘dive kick’, or more commonly know by gamers like myself as ‘the pain in my butt move’ as it is a powerful and abusable tactic. If you want to win in this game then you have to pull off a dive kick, if you manage to make contact with your opponent first, the win is all yours.

Not only is there one move in the entire game, you only use two buttons to fight. Divekick gives you the very basics, which means you can toss out that Combo Fighting 101 manual you’ve got at the back of your closet, because you aren’t going to need it here! Forget about learning how to jump, roll, kick, jump, punch and then pull off a fancy Hadouken at the end, that’s so last year, just dive and kick!

You can choose from a wide variety of characters, each having over 100 animations to cover their still state, jumping, kicking and diving moves and their win and lose poses. Each character also has two special moves, one which can be initiated on the ground and the other in the air.

The game will feature a story mode for each character and online play via player and ranked matches. Don’t expect the character stories to be serious though, expect plenty of inside jokes and puns aimed towards the genre that is fighting, and it’s lovers.

At this moment in time you might be thinking ‘that sounds easy to master’, but you’d soon disagree. Unlike your traditional fighting games the options you have here are very limited, this means you really have to think about what you’re doing in order to outsmart your opponent and that could make for some intense gaming and possibly controller throwing if you just so happen to be sat next to them.

If all the above information has wet your appetite for a fighting title that is sure to cause a lot of arguments between friends, then below you can watch the PAX East Developer Gameplay Demo thanks to Gamespot and learn a little more about Divekick.
