DLC Characters We Would Like to See in Mortal Kombat

This week sees a brand new Kombatant making his way to the arena in the 2011 reboot of Mortal Kombat. And out of all the fictional icons in the world, both inside and outside the MK universe, its 80’s horror icon, Freddy Krueger.

Despite being an unexpected (but awesome) choice to be part of the MK roster; this also presents the notion that the arenas of Outworld seem to be open to anyone who is worthy. The possibilities could be never-ending.

So Push-Start has put together a list of other individuals (who are not part of the Mortal Kombat universe) that would suit being DLC characters of the mega-popular, mega-gory, fighting franchise.

Dante (Dante’s Inferno)

Weapons/Powers of Choice:

– Death’s Scythe

– A Holy Cross, which fires a volley of energy as a projectile attack

When you put it into perspective, Dante from Dante’s Inferno would have to be heavily regarded as one of the most bad-ass characters in video game history.

Based on the first canticle of Dante Alighieri’s literary epic, The Divine Comedy; the game follows Dante, who is re-imagined as a Templar Knight. Tormented by the atrocities committed during the Third Crusade, Dante returns to his lover Beatrice, only to discover her, and his father, both brutally murdered. In an attempt to redeem his own soul, as well as saving the soul of his beloved Beatrice, Dante ventures through the nine circles of Hell to fight Lucifer himself, and save Beatrice.

Now, there are not many video game characters out there that have fought through Hell, defeated every god and Demon in his wake, and have lived to tell the tale. And that does not even include completely defying fate and slaughtering the grim reaper, at a mere ten minutes into the game. God of War’s Kratos has done familiarly incredible feats, and if he is worthy enough to be in the tournament, so is Dante.

Possible Fatality:

Use the blast energy of his Holy Cross to blast victims into the air, before slicing them in half with his Scythe as they come back down.

Sergeant Wilhelmina ‘Billie’ Church (Clive Barker’s Jericho)

Weapons/Powers of Choice:

– Nodachi – A legendary Japanese sword

– Rapid-fire sub-machine pistol

– Blood Warding that can immobilise enemies

– Fire Warding, which can be used to damage enemies

She maybe not the most familiar face in our list, but Church would fit into the Mortal Kombat universe perfectly.

A traumatic childhood lived as somewhat of a ‘miracle’ exhibition in her family’s religious sect unearthed Church’s incredible ability to cast powerful sigils, enchantments and banishments through the ritual of drawing her own blood. Her powerful abilities as a blood mage led her to being noticed by the DOW (Department of Occult Warfare), a secret U.S organisation that specialises in supernatural activity.

She became a loyal member of DOW’s Jericho squad, as a scout and assassin, after extensive training in the art of ninjutsu and guerrilla warfare.

In her line of work, it would only be a matter of time that she’d step on the toe’s of Outworld’s elite Kombatants.

Possible Fatality:

Cutting the palms of her own hands, before punching her fists into her victims stomach, and use fire ward to burn them to a crisp.

Rayne (Bloodrayne)

Weapons/Powers of Choice:

– Arm Blades

– As a Dhampir, drinking blood enhances her abilities and regenerates health

– Guns (optional, of course)

Now here’s another femme fatale to be added to the list. As we all know; Mortal Kombat has its fair share of titillating female characters, both good and evil (except Sheeva of course, she’s too much of a man to be titillating), and who better than to join the list than the leather-clad, red-headed, flirty Dhampir (half-human, half-vampire), Rayne.

Born after her human mother was raped by her vampire father, Kagan, Rayne’s mother and her entire family was slaughtered, so the only family member that Rayne could turn to was Kagan. However, Kagan’s plan back-fired. Enraged by her family’s murder, Rayne went to hunt down her father throughout her teenage years. Rayne was eventually recruited by the mysterious Brimstone Society, a fraternity of trained agents and assassin’s who eliminate supernatural threats across the globe.

Therefore, Rayne’s connection with the MK universe would be that the Brimstone Society have sent her on a mission to use her exceptional skills as an acrobatic warrior to take part in the tournament, and defeat any threat that that opposes Earth.

Rayne’s armblades, together with her thirst for blood, can see a well-balanced mix of combat reflecting MK regulars Mileena and Baraka.

Possible Fatality:

Rayne lunges onto her opponent, wrapping her legs around their waist, before biting into their neck and sucking the life out of them, until there’s nothing left but a bag of bones.

Predator (Predator Film Franchise)

Weapons/Powers of Choice:

– Wrist blades

– Plasma Caster (Shoulder Cannon)

– Combat Staff

– Net Gun

– Shuriken (similar to a throwing star)

– Optic Camouflage

A superior extraterrestrial species that is characterised by its ‘trophy hunting’ of other dangerous species for sport; that’s pretty much a summary of what the Predator is. And that said; taking part in the MK tournament will make the Predator feel like a kid in a sweet shop.

With five different films under its belt, as well numerous video games and books revolving around its universe; the Predator culture essentially revolves around the hunting and stalking of dangerous lifeforms. After making a kill, Predators typically skin or decapitate the carcass, converting it into a trophy. Although most others typically kill for sustenance or elimination of threats, Predators, due to their Tribal culture, kill for rite of passage, proving themselves as worthy warriors.

They take this so seriously, that they even breed Xenomorphs (from the Alien movie franchise), so young Predators can go and hunt them, as part of an initiation (explained in the Alien vs. Predator storyline).

With this back story of the Predator universe; it goes without saying that they would never pass the chance of proving their worth in MK.

Possible Fatality:

Ripping the victim’s head off, with the spine still attached, before pumping it into the air with a bellowing war cry.

Dante (Devil May Cry)

Weapons/Powers of Choice:

– Ebony and Ivory – Twin handguns

– Force Edge – Devil Arms sword

– Sparda – The awakened demon-forged form of the Force Edge

Being the cocky Demon Slayer with a bad attitude, it comes as no surprise that Devil May Cry’s Dante would be a DLC character that we would like to see in the MK roster.

Dante is a mercenary in modern America, who dedicates his time to hunting and slaying demons and other malevolent forces, a mission he follows in pursuit of those who killed his mother, and corrupted his brother, Virgil. He is the son of Sparda, a powerful Demon that received legendary status after rebelling against the demon emperor and defeated his army. This demonic heritage results in Dante possessing superhuman strength and supernatural powers.  Alongside this, Dante takes a lot of pride in the use of his arsenal, particularly his twin handguns “Ebony and Ivory” and his large Devil Arms sword “Force Edge”.

The story can see Dante simply being invited to the tournament by Shang Tsung, after a greatly built reputation as a formidable demon hunter. Although, Dante initially declines the offer, Shang Tsung gives Dante incentive to come along, as “the survival of his realm depends on it.”

With his immortality, superhuman strength, his preference for close-quarters combat, tongue-in-cheek attitude, and life plan of ripping apart demon’s, it cannot be ignored that Dante would make an exceptional Kombatant.

If we reflect on the primary gameplay mechanics of the Devil May Cry games, it all focuses on fast, highly stylized combat, where juggling your enemy in the air and linking lengthy combos is key. This is something that compliments Mortal Kombat exceptionally.

Possible Fatality:

Dante transforms his Force Edge sword into Sparda, before swiping at the victim at lightning speed. Although the enemy still looks intact, Dante quotes “Sweet Dreams”, before kicking him/her, making them topple over in a hundred diced pieces.

Well there you have it. Of course, the possibilities are never-ending, so: who do you think would be awesome as an MK Kombatant?

Let us know and we will give them an honourable mention.

Freddy Krueger is available now on Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Store as a DLC add-on.
