Doom Eternal Gameplay Revealed at #QuakeCon2018 and Its Coming to Nintendo Switch!

Finally we got to see some gameplay footage for the “Hell on Earth” themed sequel to the Doom 2016 reboot.  The game directors, Hugo Martin and Marty Stratton took to the stage to introduce the highly anticipated shooter to the eager crowd at QuakeCon.  At a previous QuakecCon event, the first gameplay footage was shown for Doom (2016) for only those in attendance, but this time there was a worldwide live-stream for us all to enjoy Doom Eternal.

Martin and Stratton were clearly excited to reveal Doom Eternal and so were the crowd to see it, they spoke about some of the new weapons we’ll be able to use, as well as some of the new (and returning) demons that we’ll encounter.  For starters, the beloved shotgun has had an upgrade with a Meat Hook attachment mod, which perhaps works similar to a grappling hook seen in other games.  Slayer aka “Doom Guy” will also have a lethal blade attached to his wrist for gruesome melee executions.

Other than being set on Earth, Martin and Stratton spoke of how they’re building a Doom Universe with places (and possibly realms other then Hell) that we’ve never seen before in the series.  We’ll also learn the back-story of how the UAC came to be.  We also got to see the planet Phobos where Doom Guy was on a space station still populated with humans.  Doom Guy clearly shouldn’t have been there, but who’s going to stop him?

In the gameplay footage shown at the live-stream, the Earth that we saw was torn to bits with the demons having taken over our planet.  We saw wrecked skyscrapers, demolished streets, car and bus wreckage’s and more.  Doom Guy will certainly have his work cut out, but you know he’ll be having a lot of fun in the process.

Another cool feature highlighted in the live-stream was destructible demons, where as you blast and whack the crap out of them, you’ll see the damage piece by piece.  It’s certainly an interesting concept for which we’ve seen in other games, but often with buildings, rather than NPC’s.  Fan-favourite demons will also return such as Arachnotron, Archvile and Pain Elemental.  They’ll also be many new demons including Doom Hunter and corrupted Marauders (who is said to have a special connection with Doom Guy).

There were also some new additions to the gameplay too, not only with that awesome Meat Hook mod, as we saw that Doom Guy can climb certain walls to reach higher vantage points and he has a Rocket/Flame Thrower attached on his shoulder!  Perhaps similar to what we see with the Revenant Demon?  Doom Guy will also have a new dash ability, to make him even faster than before.

However, quite possibly the most interesting gameplay reveal for me, was the ability to Invade other players campaigns.  At any point, you or an online player can invade someone else’s campaign as a demon and go after Doom Guy, whether you’re on your own or if you team up with other Demon Invaders.  If this feature isn’t your thing, it is completely optional, so you can turn the Invasion mode off if you wish.

Doom Eternal will be powered by id Tech 7 and Mick Gordon will once again return to compose the high octane soundtrack.  While no release date was confirmed, hopefully we can expect Doom Eternal to release next year for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.  And as an added bonus, it has also been confirmed to release for the Nintendo Switch alongside its fellow console counterparts, the port will once again be handled by Panic Button who dealt with the initial port of Doom on the Switch.  In case you missed it, you can watch the full Doom Eternal live-stream below.
