Ubisoft has announced a brand new title in the Rainbow Six series, forget about Rainbow Six: Patriots, as it isn’t coming. Instead Ubisoft decided to shelve Patriots and focus on a new Rainbow 6 title. Rainbow Six: Siege.

Rainbow Six: Siege has been kept quiet for over a year and a half whilst it has been developed until yesterday’s reveal. The title will be taking a new approach with a brand new team and a new vision.

It’s a complete new team on a new mandate, which is delivering a tactical shooter on the new-generation of consoles,” says brand director Alexandre Remy. Xavier Marquis, who was the art director on Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and is leading up the latest entry in the long-running counter-terrorism franchise.

The footage featured multiplayer action showcasing a huge focus on cooperation.  The game showed a lot of promise with its tactical style gameplay as the two teams faced each other in a hostage situation. The two teams of five players alternated between Team Rainbow and the Terrorists.  The players had 3 minutes to plan their approach and execute the plan.

There is no respawning,  so every move you make is fragile.  The object of the game is simple, either eliminate the opposing team to win or accomplishing a secondary goal (like safely extracting a hostage), which will also award you if successful.

“You will never find in real life a symmetrical assault, so we tried to capture all of this directly in a short amount of time,” Marquis says. “In three minutes, you will have everything: preparation phase, assault phase, observation, barricading.” Terrorists can direct the flow of combat by choosing where to set up defenses and choke points. Assault can disrupt those plans by breaching through walls and using other tools.

Rainbow 6 Siege will hit Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC only. “It’s because of the procedural destruction,” Marquis says. The pure advantage of this technology is to bring all the creativity of the player around the destruction.” Ubisoft will be sharing more about the single-player portion of the game as we get closer to the title’s 2015 release. Additionally, the team is not planning second-screen support at this time.

Rainbow 6: Siege features a full, singleplayer mode that is not simply a training ground for multiplayer.

“For the campaign, you will play only one side, the assault side,” Marquis says. “The other side will be played by AI. It’s not purely the same thing, but everything in the single and co-op will be based on all the features, all the tools, of the multiplayer first.”

The gameplay shown also showcased a lot of destructible environments. During the planning stages, we were able to see what the Terrorists were doing inside the house. We were also able to see the terrorists create barricades, bordering up windows, doors etc.  When Team Rainbow entered the house, there was several different ways they could have faced the terrorists, giving what it seems like players the freedom online when approaching the opposition. This also is encouraged  due to the range of technology to ascertain the threat.

You can send drones under doors to get a rough idea of how to approach, then you can start breaching windows, and even shooting down/through walls,  aiming to escort the hostages out.  As mentioned before the terrorist’s players can also set up traps and other defensive mechanism to stop Team Rainbow from completing their objective.

Enough of  my ramblings, how about you take a look for yourselves with the new trailer below.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege will be releasing on PC, Xbox one and PS4 in the near future.
