Electronic Arts has announced that they have purchased Titanfall developers Respawn Entertainment in a deal worth over $300m, the once independent studio formed when two of its developers left Infinity Ward, which then led to work on the original Titanfall game.

While I should be happy that this will mean big business for the studio, I can’t help but feel a little cautious for the long-haul, especially after seeing the closure of EA’s other acquired studio, developers of the Dead Space series, Visceral Games, who were of course working on a Star Wars game led by former Naughty Dog developer; Amy Hennig.  Hopefully history won’t repeat itself and EA provides the best support for this talented team of developers.

Upon the announcement of the purchase, EA not only mentioned the other current Star Wars game which is in development with Respawn, but they also announced that the team are currently working on a new Titanfall game, as well as a new “VR gaming experience.”  It would also be awesome, given some of the teams Call of Duty experience, perhaps we could one day see Respawn revive the Medal of Honor series?  Probably not, but it’s a nice thought none the less.

Below are statements from CEO of Electronic Arts, Andrew Wilson and CEO of Respawn Entertainment, Vince Zampella.  You can also read our review of the fantastic Titanfall 2 here.

“We’ve seen firsthand the world-class calibre of Respawn as a development studio with incredible vision, deep talent and an inspiring creative mindset,” said Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts. “Our long-time partnership is grounded in a shared desire to push the boundaries and deliver extraordinary and innovative new experiences for players around the world. Together, we’ve brought this to life in the Titanfall franchise, and now with the Respawn team joining EA, we have exciting plans to accomplish even more amazing things in the future.”

“We started Respawn with the goal to create a studio with some of the best talent in the industry, and to be a top developer of innovative games,” said Vince Zampella, CEO of Respawn Entertainment. “We felt that now was the time to join an industry leader that brings the resources and support we need for long term success, while still keeping our culture and creative freedom. EA has been a great partner over the years with Titanfall and Titanfall 2, and we’re excited to combine our strengths. This is a great next step for Respawn, EA, and our players.”
