Smaller titles, independent or otherwise, have been seeing much more love with this new generation of gaming than ever before, with both PS4 and Xbox One making concerted efforts to push and support them alongside the big releases.

It would seem that EA has joined the team as well, with its recent announcement of EA Originals at the EA Play conference.

Inspired by their experience working with Developer Coldwood on the gorgeous puzzle platformer Unravel, EA Originals is intended to find great new games and support smaller studios in getting them published.

Executive vice president of EA Patrick Söderlund said:

“Our partnership on Unravel with Coldwood showed us something more profound, something bigger than just one game. It confirmed something we’d been thinking about for some time, and spurred us into action. There are so many amazing games out there today, with highly creative development teams putting their hearts and souls into their projects. There are more stories like Coldwood and Unravel, making games you deserve to play.”

To do this EA have stated their plan will be to offer support to these developers to help them make the most of their games. This includes areas such as marketing, publishing, and funding.

The first game to come about through EA Originals is an interesting title called Fe.

Developed by Indie studio Zoink (the devs behind Zombie Vikings and Stick it to the Man), Fe is being billed as “a personal narrative about our relationship with nature”.

“It’s a story that reminds us that everything in this world is connected, living in a delicate balance that is constantly under threat”.

It’s unclear what exactly all this means from a gameplay standpoint, but the trailer suggests some exploration and environmental puzzling will be its focus.

The footage of our playable creature exploring a mysterious forest certainly looks atmospheric and intriguing – we see the little creature climbing to the top of trees, riding on top of flying creatures, as well as avoiding some ominous looking creatures which seem to be causing trouble in the forest.

Apparently (according to other reports) each creature of this world communicates through song, of which you will learn in order to explore more of the world – meaning it’s not just a pretty looking game, but also a pretty sounding one.

Check out the trailer and screenshots for yourself, and keep an eye out for more information on Fe here as it comes.
