Following an interview conducted by Geoff Keighley on a YouTube Live at E3 stream (via IGN and thanks to PC Gamer for the heads-up), Bethesda Game Studio’s Game Director Todd Howard confirmed that an Elders Scrolls VI is in development.  We expected this to be the case, but at least now we have some solid confirmation from Bethesda themselves.

That’s kind of like the elephant in the room, always, when we talk about anything, and I think it’s good to tell our fans in these moments, yes, of course we are (referring to Elder Scrolls VI),” Howard said. “It’s something we love. But it is—I have to be careful what I say—it’s a very long way off. I could sit here and explain the game to you, and you would say, ‘That sounds like you don’t even have the technology—how long is that going to take?’ And so it’s something that’s going to take a lot of time, what we have in mind for that game.

Todd also confirmed that Bethesda are working on two “large projects” as well as the new Elders Scrolls, though he didn’t confirm what those titles will be.  If they’re not both new IP’s, I’d take an educated guess that they could very well be sequels to The Evil Within and Wolfenstein: The New Order.  Here’s what Todd had to say on the two other unnamed titles that Bethesda are working on:

We think very long term. We’re not a developer that’s going to rush something like this out. Any of our games. So when you think about, what is the future of that kind of game, we have a pretty good idea of what it would be, and it’s just going to take technology and time that, really, we don’t have necessarily right now.

For now we can look forward to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition releasing on PC, PS4 and Xbox One on October 28th.
