Some good news for fans of the delightful action platformer The Messenger, as some new content has been released to extend your experience beyond the original story.

Titled ‘Picnic Panic’ this DLC is a summer themed getaway for our adventurer, taking him to Voodkin Island where he must rescue creatures captured by the demon Barma’thazël (say that three times fast).

For those that didn’t play the original game, gameplay consists of fast paced and precise platforming – jumping, climbing and using various tools that you gradually unlock to explore the Metroidvania environments. There is combat, so to speak, but it’s very simplistic and clearly used more as an additional obstacle to your platforming – though there were some rather cool boss fights.

The main ‘gimmick’ of the game is your ability to travel forward or backward in time by entering portals. These were used to great effect in puzzles – meaning you had to pay attention to how the environment changed depending on what time period you were in – and as a nice touch the graphics updated themselves to match.

The game presents a huge amount of charm with a silly story and witty writing and a fantastic soundtrack – I highly recommend trying it out if you haven’t already (you can read my review of the base game here).

As for the DLC, it’s being released absolutely free, obviously for those who already own the base game, and some of the environments in the trailer look very colourful indeed.

You can get the game, along with its DLC, right now on PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch.
