Free Resident Evil 6 DLC on Its Way

After just over a week on release, Capcom Unity has detailed an update regarding two pieces of free DLC coming to Resident Evil 6. These free modes are on-disc pieces of DLC, and they have clarified that the future paid DLC will not be on-disc.

The first is a new difficulty mode, No Hope (inspired by the game’s tagline, “No Hope Left”), which will make Professional seem like a picnic (in Capcom’s words, it’s “super hard”) and extends the replay value of the campaigns. Will there be an extra trophy/achievement for beating the game on No Hope mode? Details of what exactly makes this harder than the already grueling Professional mode have yet to be revealed, but it has our attention. Challenge accepted.

The second is regarding Ada’s campaign, which at the moment is only available upon clearing the three main campaigns (Leon’s, Chris’ and Jake’s) and is only available in single player (many of you beat the main three campaigns with a friend, and had to have them sit on the sidelines when you got to Ada’s story). But now Capcom is updating the game so that you can play Ada’s campaign without having to finish the other three, and so that you can have a co-op partner.

Whilst Ada’s campaign is maybe better played alone (hers is certainly the most atmospheric and being alone heightens this) and played after the three main campaigns (the story is revealed in a particular way, as a certain massive plot element is revealed in Ada’s campaign after some confusion will build about her character in the main three campaigns – changing that will spoil that arrangement somewhat), it’s a nice touch that leaves more options to the player. If you want a lone wolf experience and you’d rather leave her campaign until last, you can still do that, but it allows that dumped co-op partner to return for the final chapter in Resident Evil 6. Who could the virtual co-op partner be?

In terms of extra modes outside of the campaigns, Resident Evil 6 currently only has two (Agent Hunt and The Mercenaries), but as revealed in September we will see three new modes, Survivors, Predator and Siege, coming as timed exclusives to Xbox 360 before other platforms. These are paid, non-disc DLC modes. Capcom’s previous press release details these modes:

“Survivors Mode takes the classic solo- and team-based versus mode and adds a twist. Get killed and you respawn as an enemy character with the ability to attack the human characters. Take down two human characters to resurrect in human form. Last man or team standing wins.

In Predator Mode, one player takes on the role of the Ustanak, the fearsome B.O.W. that stalks Jake Muller throughout his campaign, and tries to eliminate the human players. The humans’ task: stop the deadly B.O.W. in its tracks, or at least survive until the end of the session.

Choosing the human side in Siege Mode will see players protecting a single NPC, while as a member of the enemy team, players will need to eliminate that same NPC. If the NPC is still alive at the end of the time period, the human team wins.

Survivors, Predator and Siege modes will all support up to six players online and be played using maps from Mercenaries Mode.

Players will be able to track their accomplishments in these three modes alongside their main campaign statistics and compare their performance with others by registering on Resident Evil.Net, the free online service that launches alongsideResident Evil 6.

Further post-launch downloadable content for Resident Evil 6 will include additional maps for Mercenaries, which can in turn then be used as maps for Survivors, Predator and Siege modes, plus other items yet to be announced.”

Resident Evil 6 is available now for Xbox 360, PS3 and is coming soon to PC, and was recently reviewed by Push-Start.
