#GAMESCOM – MGSV: TTP Demo, Kojima Would Love To Remake Original MGS

During the extended demo at the Gamescom Metal Gear Solid V event, we got to see a pre recorded demo in-play of The Phantom Pain.  I presume it was pre-record to avoid any ‘live’ problems that may occur.  Anywho the demo shown was actually the same one that was presented at E3, but this time the player took a different approach and different vantage points.

What was really interesting is that because preassembly the game was from the same save file, when the player revisited that location, the guard ratio was cranked up a notch.  The guard ratio was increased especially considering that a lot of mayhem was caused during the E3 demo.  But what was really cool is that the guards remembered that the player previously performed a lot of headshot takedowns.  So this time round, the guards we’re wearing steel helmets to avoid getting a bullet in their heads.

Yesterday during the Playstation conference a gameplay trailer was shown, detailing the mighty cardboard box.  It showed many ways in which the cardboard box could be utilised within The Phantom Pain.  This time round however, which is different to previous Metal Gear Solid games, is that the cardboard box can have various images on the outside to deceive the guards.  You can pick from a hot babe or a guard, both provoking different reactions from the NPC’s.  But whichever you choose, will likely result in you’re bursting out of the box and POW!  Takedown!

Other variations of the box were shown, such as a PS4 and Xbox One box which fitted on Big Boss’s head and did not cover his whole body.  The cardboard box is used for comical purposes, as well as tactical, but the console boxes add an extra level of humour.  You may have also seen the leak earlier from yesterday (as seen below), in which it was accidently revealed that Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain will be coming to the PC via Steam.  For the official announcement, a Steam cardboard box was used (instead of the consoles boxes) to announce this news.

The Steam announcement was initially posted early by error on the Konami UK website, which has since been removed. Luckily enough a NeoGAF user captured the required image for us all to see (as seen below).

During the Gamescom demo, we also saw more of the Fulton recovery balloon in action once again, in which animals, weapons and vehicles can be sent back to your Motherbase for your PMC’s to benefit.  As with the E3 demo, the poor goat was used as an example.  This goat however was under the watchful eyes from a pack of wolves, one of many creatures in the game that will offer non-human dangers.

The Fulton recovery balloon can also used to take out the enemy, as demonstrated in the demo.  As a vacated jeep was used to take-out a helicopter that was scouting for Big Boss, eat your heart out Die Hard’s John McClane.

Please enjoy the Gamescom demo footage found below.

After the demonstration was finished, Hideo Kojima took to the stage for a Q & A.  Not all questions were really all that relevant, but there were also a fair few that will spark much interest among Metal Gear Solid fans.  Such as when a fan asked Hideo if he could work on one game using the Fox Engine, to which Hideo replied that while he’s not a big fan of remakes, he would love to recreate the original Metal Gear Solid from the PS1, using the Fox Engine.

He stated that while he wouldn’t want it to be a like for like remake, he would love to take what worked from the original and mix it up with the technical advantages he has today.  So in a nutshell, if he recreated the original Metal Gear Solid, he would want to retain the great moments and keep its essence, while moving it forward into the modern day with fresh ideas using the Fox Engine.  Let’s hope that this Fox Engine remake happens.

He also spoke of how after the E3 demo had finished, gamers could visit the booths at E3 and witness their Motherbase being attacked by other players in which you had to defend yourself from that attack (which will be an online feature in The Phantom Pain).  However for Gamescom, that role will be reversed in the booths and this time, gamers in attendance will be able to play as the one’s attacking the Motherbase.

Sadly when asked, Hideo Kojima did not reveal a release date for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, but judging by the little smirk on his face, I believe he has a clear idea as to when it will release.  Hideo you tease…you! (shakes fist).
