Gauntlet is widely considered a classic in the eyes of those who reminisce over the days of arcade machines and the Commodore’s and Spectrum’s of yesteryear. Yesterday WB Games announced that Arrowhead Game Studios, the masterminds behind the renowned Magicka, were in fact developing a brand new version of Gauntlet “reborn for a new generation of heroes.”

The game thus far seems very faithful to the original, with all four different characters you work as a team combining your abilities in order to progress. The warrior, being especially good in melee combat, the Valkyrie, being able to absorb the most damage with high armour, the Wizard, having the most powerful magic and the Elf, who is quick on his feet. As opposed to the 2D sprites of the original, this time the game is entirely 3D in a top-down view, of which some gameplay can be found in the trailer below.

Currently the only announced platform for release is the PC via Steam, which will in fact include full SteamOS support. The release of Gauntlet also marks the launch of the WB Games Vault, which will include direct-to-digital games that are based off existing Warner Bros. and Midway brands as well as some brand new IP’s. Gauntlet has no firm release date at the current time, although the trailer does say Summer 2014.
