Gears of War 5 Will Have No Paid Loot Boxes, RNG or Season Pass

It’s fair to say that Gears of War 4 is very loot box and micro-transaction heavy, and in this day and age, such practices are being more and more frowned upon by the community.  As a result, many developers and publishers are ditching such practices, although they do find other ways to generate bonus income after a purchase of the game, which is the case here with Gears of War 5.

On the Gears 5 website, it was announced that the game will not feature any paid loot boxes aka Gear Packs, no paid season pass, no RNG as you’ll be able to purchase paid content directly and DLC maps will be free for matchmaking and private matches.  You’ll be able to earn in-game content by simply playing the game with the new Tour of Duty system.

The Tour of Duty system will involve daily challenges and seasonal Medals as you rank-up, and earn cosmetic items such as character and weapon skins.  Knowing what gear you earn will be quite the simple process by the sounds of things, as it will be detailed what you must do to earn specific gear.

Tour of Duty will run in a seasonal format, so content being rewarded will change from season to season with new challenges to take on.  It has also been made clear that they’ll be no Premium pay-only content included in Tour of Duty.

There will still be loot boxes of sorts, albeit they’ll be totally free just by playing the game as you would normally do.  Just by playing the various multiplayer modes, it will all go towards being rewarded with a Supply Drop which features a “unique pool of content”.  Any duplicate items that you might receive will be turned into resources that can be used for crafting supply items.  Supply drops or its content cannot be purchased with real-world money.

We did mention earlier on that they’ll be no Gears Packs and content will be purchasable directly with no RNG.  This will be done via the in-game store with a premium in-game currency called Iron.  If implicated fairly, this should be a decent compromise by having no loot boxes and free multiplayer maps, and at least we’ll be able to purchase any premium cosmetic items directly when we want them.  On the Gears 5 website, they also clarified that they’ll be no real-money purchases that will give you a competitive edge, so in a nutshell, no pay-to-win.

However, you will be able to purchase multiplayer XP boosts, which will effectively help you unlock certain cosmetics that little faster, but as long as the levelling-up grind is implanted fairly and at a natural progression, I’m fine with that.  So watch this space.
