It’s hard to believe that Alan Wake released way back in 2010 and it’s easy to forget that it took around 5 years for it to eventually release.  But in my experience, it was well worth the wait.  However, since 2010 we’ve been waiting another 5 years in the hope that we will finally get a sequel, especially as the game (with its story DLC) left us on such a cliffhanger.

Yet the idea of a sequel to Alan Wake has always been in the forefront of Remedy Entertainments mind, but whether we’ll see it release is another kettle of fish.  Despite this, after speaking to Polygon, Remedy has revealed that they have developed a sequel of sorts, just not the kind that was ever going to be released.  The gameplay demo that you see below was created following the release of the game to give a feel to the mood of the proposed sequel, should it ever happen.  Regardless, the footage that we see here looks very playable and it will no doubt tease those wishing to see an Alan Wake 2 release.

Last month, Microsoft issued a questionnaire that asked gamers if they would like to see an Alan Wake Remaster given away as a pre-order incentive for Remedy’s next project Quantum Break.  Obviously this got many fans excited and will no doubt entice fans to pre-order the game, but some (including me), would be more than happy to buy the Remaster outright.  If this Remaster does happen, it should give Remedy an indication to the interest surrounding an Alan Wake sequel and if released as a standalone purchase, not to mention sales of Quantum Break, it should also help the studio fund the next Alan Wake game.  In my opinion, with the revival of the survival horror genre, the Remaster and the sequel would generate more interest then ever before.

When asked about the sequel and if publisher Microsoft would be interested, Remedy’s creative director Sam Lake said that “I wouldn’t start guessing,” he added “But definitely we’ll have those discussions.”  Sam Lake went on to say “It’s hard to guess,” he also said. “I would love to do that … it feels that time has only refined the ideas of what the sequel would be, which is great. It’s almost, in some ways and on some level, that all of this extra time to think it about it has made it tastier and more exciting.” Before finishing up with “Only time will tell.

So will the sequel ever happen?  To quote Same Lake “Only time will tell.”  However, I have a feeling that it will happen, but whether the series stays within Microsoft or becomes multiformat remains to be seen and if the Alan Wake game is anything to go by, expect the unexpected.  You can read the full in-depth article from Polygon here.
