A brand new survival horror game was announced a few days ago alongside a Kickstarter pledge, which the developers are describing as a “photorealistic horror game”.

Titled The Beast Inside, the game puts us in the shoes of Adam, a CIA cryptanalyst who is working on cracking soviet code during the Cold War.

Adam moves to a peaceful countryside house with his wife Emma, however upon discovering a mysterious diary in his new attic, terrible nightmares from the past are released to haunt them.

It’s an interesting setting, combining the Cold War present of the game with these apparitions from the past (Civil War era) could lead to some interesting historical designs and context. Even more so as the game is to include two protagonists, Adam in the present 1979 and Nicolas in 1864.

The game plays like your typical post-amnesia first person horror. Exploration, picking up items to examine, using your cursor to open doors and draws. Nothing particularly special in this respect, though there’s suggestions of some combat on the Kickstarter page. Not that this is a detriment, and in fact the game looks very frightening and impressive indeed, particularly as a result of the game’s graphics.

I’m not usually a stickler for high end graphics (they’re nice, certainly, but I feel environmental detail is more important to a game than things looking shiny), but The Beast Inside’s boasting of extended photogrammetry techniques has actually got me pretty excited. The environments look pretty of course, but it’s the ghouls that benefit the most, being realised in such an ominous and impressive fashion.

It’s definitely one to keep on your radar if you’re a horror fan. And if you fancy backing the project to help it along, there’s still plenty of days to go on its Kickstarter.

The game is currently estimated to release in Q1 of 2019 if all goes well, and is coming to PC. However PS4, Xbox One and even VR are listed as stretch goal possibilities for now.
