Soon to be available via Steam, with integration into the Steam Works system to download, rate and share, the Editor DLC ‘Perpetual Testing Initiative’ will be available completely free of charge. It will allow users to use a simple graphic editor to make their own testing chambers, and while it’s no lie that eager level designers could dig into Portal 2 as is to make their own levels, it’s far from being a simple process for the casual gamer.

The trailer below (via GT:TV) details the rather simple looking editor system, allowing a drag and drop method while working in an isometric view. This allows for a much more fluid method of level creation, and hopefully it won’t be long before we see some pretty unique chambers. Current levels and mods have really expanded the possibilities of Portal 2, taking gamers out of the test chambers, though at least in this first release (designed to make single player levels, though co-op is soon to follow via a patch) it looks like you’ll be confined to said chambers.

It’s certainly a big step in terms of creation tools for all gamers to get their hands on, and it’s a positive step for Valve and Steam. Portal 2 is a fantastic game, so if you still haven’t gotten around to it, there’s that to get through first!!

‘Perpetual Testing Initiative’ will be available via Steam May 8th for PC and Mac.
