Earlier this week, Square Enix has announced a brand new PlayStation 4 ‘console exclusive’ title called Left Alive. The announcement has taken place during Sony’s conference at Tokyo Games Show, and while no other versions of the title have been announced at the time, Square Enix has stated that their upcoming action-survival shooter will come to both PlayStation 4, and PC.

Many who are familiar with the Metal Gear Solid series are likely to feel right at home, with Left Alive, as artist Yoji Shinkawa of the Metal Gear fame is heavily involved in the project. In addition, it also has been announced that Toshifumi Nabeshima (director, Armored Core series) will be Left Alive‘s director, Takayuki Yanase (mech designer, Ghost in the Shell: Arise and Xenoblade Chronicles X) and Square Enix’s Shinji Hashimoto (Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy series) will be title’s leading producer.

At the current time, little is known about Left Alive, beside of the fact that it will launch sometime in 2018, and that it is set to take place in a war torn world of the near future. A trailer which accompanied the announcement is rather short, and does very little to showcase the main premise of the title. However, it’s main purpose is to showcase the talent behind the title, in order to show the fans that Metal Gear, at least in spirit, is not dead yet.

If you are as intrigued about Left Alive as we are, then you probably won’t have to wait long for more information about the title, as it is likely that both Square Enix and Sony will reveal more information and promotional materials at Paris Games Week, and PlayStation’s PSX. It is also possible that Left Alive may not be a complete AAA title, as its launch time frame suggests that it is likely to have a similar scope to the recently released Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, rather than Metal Gear Solid V.

Update: Following the initial announcement, Square Enix, the publisher of the rather unexpected Left Alive, has published yet another trailer. Which this time round, features short snippets of clearly unfinished game-play, which as you can see for yourself, doesn’t inspire one with optimism.  However, there still at least a year between now and potential release of Left Alive, meaning that all its visible flaws may be ironed out by then.

From what we can deduct from the trailer, it seems like Left Alive is going to be a high octane, high adrenaline, version of Metal Gear Solid. As the short portions of gameplay showcase combat against Metal Gear like mech’s, but one which is more reminiscent of Metal Gear: Rising, rather than Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. But before one will be able to pass judgment on the state and quality of Left Alive, he/she will have to wait until at least, mid 2018.
