Psychonauts is a perfect example of why re-releasing a game can be a great tactic. Despite its critical success upon its release it wasn’t really financially successful. Over the last five years though its release on platforms such as Steam has led to a large amount of support for the quirky platformer. At The Game Awards last week a sequel was announced to the world to a fair bit of cheer.

Those cheers became a bit of a murmur when a crowd funding campaign was also announced, BUT Double Fine are being crystal clear with what the funds are for. They admit that the game won’t be made just with crowd funding money and their tiers are alright. Not a digital version of the game for less than £20 alright (thank you Shenmue 3), but still pretty good. If you want, you can have a look at the campaign here.

Since the first Psychonauts was released the team has gone their separate ways, but most of them are getting back together to make the sequel. Tim Schafer will project lead again and it seems the great sense of humour is still there. Will it be any good? We’ll have to wait and see, but if you were a fan of the original you should definitely keep an eye on its progress.

It should be out in 2018, although the mess of the Broken Age Kickstarter may make people sceptical about whether they’ll deliver it on time, even with such a vague window.
