Reports Suggest Re-Directed Open-World Star Wars Game Has Been Cancelled

When Amy Hennig joined EA to work on a narrative driven Star Wars game, it was largely met with much buzz.  After all, Amy played a huge role in the Uncharted series and with her talent leading the charge for a new Star Wars game, it was well worth getting excited about.

However, in October 2017, following the unfortunate closure of Visceral Games, who are famed for the Dead Space series, EA also took the decision to change the course of this Star Wars game.  Moving it from a more linear, narrative experience, to something that sounds more like an open-world, “live service” kind of game.  This along with the closure of Visceral, was not so well received.

Then June of last year, like the situation couldn’t get any worse, Amy Hennig left EA and this Star Wars project to form her own development studio that would primarily work on VR based games, leaving the Star Wars title “on the shelf.”  The Star Wars project was then moved to EA Vancouver to handle the development.

Well, it seems the situation has gotten worse, because according to sources close to Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, this very Star Wars game has now been outright cancelled!  While we’ve never seen any gameplay footage of this Star Wars title, despite re-directions and developer shifts, fans were still eager for the release of this game.

According to Jason Schreier, EA are yet to officially comment on these reports, but I have no reason to doubt the news coming from his sources.  This latest news just follows a long-list of disappointments since this game was announced.  Finally, according to Eurogamer, this Star Wars project has apparently been cancelled in favour of a smaller project set to release in 2020!

But at least we still have Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order by Respawn Entertainment out this year, well, as long as that doesn’t get cancelled too.  Once official word gets out, we’ll update this very article.
