I would say that the rumours in this article should come as no surprise, but I think I’d be more accurate in saying that, I don’t think it will be missed, but according to Justin Leeper, a performance and capture artist as Deadman and Higgs in Death Stranding, and has been a narrative lead in three Road to Wrestlemania modes in previous WWE games, has claimed that 2K will not be releasing WWE 2K21 this year.

He claims that his sources have stated to him that the forthcoming series entry will be a now show in 2020, hopefully buried deep in the soil by HHH’s legendary “Golden Shovel”.  However, he has claimed that a different WWE “branded” game will release this year in its place.

Since the WWE license was taken over by 2K, I think it’s fair to say that the franchise has been on a metaphorical losing streak which was previously developed by Yukes, before Visual Concepts took over WWE 2K20, which was already partly through development, with this being arguably the lowest point in the series.  When I reviewed WWE 2K20, it certainly had more negatives then positives, and the developers even made the baffling decision to change the controls, not to improve them, but changed them for seemingly no good reason, which just made a poor game, unnecessarily confusing at times, especially when you’re used to previous instalment commands.  Not to mention that it was full of bugs, clippy gameplay and a MyCareer mode that was just so painfully boring.

So I guess with the series heading on a downward spiral in recent years and the added fact of the Coronavirus pandemic turning just about everything upside down on its head, the writing is on the wall for many games, especially for one as troubled as the WWE 2K series.

If I was being an optimist, hopefully Visual Concepts can have more than enough time to work on their own vision of the next WWE 2K game (likely for next-gen), with their own assets, ideas and direction.  What are your thoughts on this rumoured cancellation?  Let us know across our social media channels.
