Resident Evil Co-Op Spin-Off Gameplay and Details Drops, Beta Announced #TGS2019

At the beginning of the week, Capcom released the teaser trailer for Project Resistance, a co-op shooter and spin-off to the Resident Evil series, and as promised, Capcom has now released a gameplay trailer, as well as some details on how the game will play.  They have also revealed that Project Resistance will be getting a beta.

So, how does Project Resistance play?  Well, first of all as a worst case scenario, I was hoping that this would be a new Resident Evil: Outbreak game, an online co-op game that released during the early 2000’s for the PlayStation 2, a game that I considered to be well ahead of its time.  Yes it had some issues, but it was a very ambitious title and its story somewhat added to the lore of the series.  Sadly, this is not an Outbreak game, though it is a co-op title.

Project Resistance is a 4v1 asymmetrical co-op game, perhaps similar to the likes of Dead by Daylight or Friday the 13th, with hints of Left 4 Dead.  Four players will take control of one of the four playable human characters, each with their own unique skill-sets and power-ups.  We have a hacker, a healer, a brawler and a tank.  However, the player controlling the infected is known as the “Mastermind“.

The Mastermind will oversee the map and your job will be to stop the four players from escaping the scenario.  Project Resistance is located in an Umbrella facility on the outskirts of Racoon City and the Mastermind will be able to place zombies and other mutants in the way of the human characters.  The Mastermind will also be able to set traps, lock doors, turn out the lights and during certain points in the game; you’ll even be able to drop in Lickers and the mighty Mr X.  For a brief time, you’ll also be able to take control of the enemies you place, including the tyrant, Mr X.

When the match starts, a timer will countdown, however, that time can take jumps forwards and backwards depending on each of the player’s actions during the game.  So if you do something good as the humans, you’ll have time added, however, if the Mastermind plants a successful trap, you human players will have their timed deducted.

Now, I always try to remain optimistic and I often look to give someone or something the benefit of the doubt, but I’m not sure how I feel about Project Resistance, and I’m not sure whether this is a game that anyone asked for, after all, Capcom and the Resident Evil series doesn’t have the best of relationships with multiplayer related games.  If I was being optimistic, I’d say that at least its running on the RE Engine and hopefully the developers will learn from the mistakes of the shockingly poor Umbrella Corps, and will learn from successful asymmetrical games currently on the market.

However, the pessimist in me says that this is just another asymmetrical co-op shooter jumping on the bandwagon, living off the Resident Evil license.  Also, I noticed that towards the end of the gameplay trailer, the Mastermind will have use of action cards, which might play-out similar to that of a modern board game, which I quite like the idea of, but, it also flings the door wide open for micro-transaction possibilities.

Regardless, I will still give this game the benefit of the doubt, but it’s just a shame that Capcom didn’t at least tease a Resident Evil 8 or a Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake alongside this reveal.  We get can however get an added insight to how Project Resistance will play when the beta launches later this year, you can sign-up here.  The beta will run from October 4th to October 7th, with registration staying open until September 18th, you’ll also have to sign-up to the Resident Evil: Ambassador program to be in with a chance of being selected.

I’d be interested to know your thoughts on Project Resistance across our social media channels.  Project Resistance will release for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, likely early 2020.
