It seems to be the time of the retro FPS again (not that this ever really went away), what with games like Dusk and Amid Evil proving popular takes on the gory, fast paced action of old.

Wrath: Aeon of Ruin can be added to that list as a dark fantasy horror powered using the original Quake engine.

“The Old World has passed away. Amidst the ruins lurks an ageless fear. Outlander, once adrift upon the Ageless Sea, finds himself on the shores of a dying world. From the consuming gloom emerges a figure cloaked in white, the Shepherd of Wayward Souls, who burdens Outlander with hunting down the remaining Guardians of the Old World.”

The game will see you shooting your way past horrific monsters through crypts, ruins, temples and forests utilising its stock of 9 weapons and 10 artefacts. These include the double-barrelled shotgun, and more, let’s say, unconventional weapons such as The Retcher and the Fangspitter, which provide ammo from cysts and teeth ripped from enemy corpses…yeah, disgusting.

The developers, interestingly, describe the game as having a “hub world design”, which not only encourages general exploration, but also searching for keys throughout the game’s five worlds that can open “other doors” – essentially large open areas that you gradually unlock more of.

Developed by 3D Realms and KillPixel, the team boasts of its inspirations from titles such as Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Blood and of course Quake, while also having the likes of Quake Champions Composer Andrew Hulshult on board for the soundtrack.

Watch the trailer below for a little taste of the action. The game is due to release this summer for PC, and console versions coming much later in early 2020.
