Mirror’s Edge 2 was confirmed at the end of Electronic Arts’ conference at E3. But for reasons best known to themselves, DICE have not approached previous Mirror’s Edge writer, Rhianna Pratchett, for their writing team on Mirror’s Edge 2. You cant blame her if she’s upset over this. She tweeted:

Because people are asking, I’m NOT the writer for Mirror’s Edge 2. I’ve never even been approached. For clarity – EA own all my work for Mirror’s Edge (+ comics) but they are under no obligation to use, or even speak to me, about new stuff.

This has raised a few eyebrows because Pratchett was responsible for the story behind Mirror’s Edge and creating the lead heroine of the series, Faith. Surely for an origins story on the protagonist, you would want the original writer, someone who knows this character like the back of their hand. It seems an odd move for DICE to make.

Pratchett also penned comic books of Faith’s backstory, including how she got her tattoos. However the trailer shown by Electronic Arts at E3, shows Faith getting them done all at once. So this is throwing all of Faith’s background and Pratchett’s hard work out the window. To add insult to injury, alot of Pratchett’s work was taken out of the previous game. 90% of Faith’s comments were removed because player testers became confused when they heard a distorted voice chiming in during gameplay.

So from the looks of it, Faith is no longer a creation of Rhianna Pratchett. It’s a pity Faith wont be the Faith we remember. Pratchett worked wonders with Lara Croft in the latest Tomb Raider, she writes strong female protagonists and is fantastic at her job.  As a fan of hers and her father, I hope the outcome for Rhianna is positive and wish her every success with her future projects. But its still early days and who knows what might happen.
