An interesting looking turn based RPG incorporating sea travel and fantasy has been released on Steam Early Access, with developer Pera looking to polish and expand the experience over the course of a few months.

Exploring the archipelago (a sea with many groups of islands) world of Overfall, you will encounter various races, quests, companions and a variety of locations.

After being sent on a quest to another dimension by the ‘Everking’, our heroes return to find that 300 years have passed and the Citadel (where the King resided) has disappeared. It is, therefore, your job to find this citadel, all the while being pursued by a fleet of invaders known as the Vorn.

In order to reveal the citadel you need to activate two beacons, for which you will need to gain the trust of the world’s races, which, you guessed it, means completing quests for them to gain reputation, as well as access to their homelands (along with other quests and companions). Take a look at the story trailer above for more info on the story.

Alongside this reputation building and exploration, the game is promising both action oriented and diplomatic solutions. The two trailers above and below show a bit of this in the form of choices given by your characters and companions. Depending on who you have in your party, these choices can differ, resulting in different directions and outcomes.

The combat looks fairly standard turn based RPG (various skills, abilities, etc), and visually the game seems quirky if a bit simple (the trailer below shows of some of the gameplay features), but the narrative/choice based aspects of the gameplay look fairly unique and intriguing to say the least.

In addition there’s a ‘create your own stories’ mode, where the community will be able to make quests with choices, dialogue, etc. There’s even a writing guide available, written by Pera Games in collaboration with Chris Avellone (Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment, Pillars of Eternity), to help people along (take a look at the guide here).

The game currently costs £6.99 on Steam Early Access, where it is expected to last for a few months.
