When Shenmue 3 was announced at E3 2015 with a Kickstarter campaign, it reached its goals with ease and yet three years on, that fundraising amount still keeps increasing. The latest is a result of Shenmue 3’s fundraising campaign reaching over $7m with Kickstarter and Slacker Backer combined, which means that it’s unlocked another stretch goal.
The $7m stretch goal has unlocked the Battle System Expanded, an AI battling system that will aid players that are perhaps a little unfamiliar with fighting games. The official blurb courtesy of the most recent Kickstarter campaign email reads:
This control system lets you automatically unleash the perfect technique in response to the opponent’s positioning and distance. R&D for this system is based on Yu Suzuki’s concept for players who are not used to fighting games or for those who want a full immersion battle experience. This battle system is highly compatible with, and will be an extension to the current battle system.
Should Shenmue 3 reach its $11m stretch goal milestone, it will unlock new areas, jobs for Ryo and some new mini-games, and if the campaign raises a further $1.8m, hitting a total of $8.8m, Shenmue 3 will become the highest grossing videogame on Kickstarter of all-time.
Shenmue 3 is set to release sometime next year for PC and PlayStation 4. Shenmue I and II is also set to re-release for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on August 21st.
