The Bug Butcher, a bullet hell, shoot ‘em up style game inspired by the likes of Super Pang (or Super Buster Bros) – an arcade shooter released on the super NES in the early 90s – is set to release from its Steam Early Access state on the 19th of this month.

Playing as Harry – “laser junky, gluten addict, and exterminator extraordinaire” – it’s your job to blast through waves of giant bugs spread across 30 levels. The catch: you can only fire upwards.

Judging from the trailer, the action looks fast and challenging as you burst and explode bugs, and avoid incoming fire. It definitely seems to have that bullet hell edge to it, and with the addition of co-op play it only seems to get more hectic. Your arsenal is upgradable and power ups are available to give you a boost, seeming to offer attacks ranging from lasers to missiles.

The art style is certainly a treat for the eyes as well – very colourful, with grotesque but oddly cute enemy designs. It looks a heap of fun, and the Early Access reviews on Steam seem to be mostly positive – praising the game’s challenge and need for strategic planning.

Take a look at the trailer above, and keep an eye out here for a review in the not too distant future.
