There have been a lot of rumours regarding the Resident Evil series of late, more recently regarding Resident Evil 8.  However, following the success of Capcom’s remakes for Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, it’s fair to assume that more remakes will be on the way.  But fans were asking whether or not we’d get Code Veronica or RE4 remade, well, if these latest set of rumours are to be believed, the next remake in the series will be for Resident Evil 4.

For me personally, Code Veronica will always have a special place in my heart and it was the sole reason why I purchased my beloved Sega Dreamcast, but with it aging not all that well, especially compared to RE4, I’d prefer to see Code Veronica getting the next remake treatment.  However, if it was going to be Resident Evil 4, then I won’t complain, even if the original on the GameCube (and its many remasters that followed) still hold up incredibly well to this day.

Well, according to VGC, they claim that their reliable sources have stated that Capcom originally approached series veteran and director of the original Resident Evil, Shinji Mikami, but, due to his commitments with Tango Gameworks GhostWire Tokyo under Bethesda, he was unable to work on the RE4 remake.  However, it is believed that Mikami will assist on the remake to provide “informal advice on its direction”, so it will at least have some of the survival horror specialist’s influence.

So instead of Mikami taking a developmental lead, the rumoured Resident Evil 4 remake will be handled by former Platinum Games chief, Tatsuya Minami, who is still an interesting and exciting choice.  Minami has also worked on a number of games in the series such as the original Resident Evil (on Sega Saturn), Resident Evil: Survivor, Resident Evil Zero, as well as another survival horror from Capcom and the somewhat underrated Clock Tower 3.

It is believed that this Resident Evil 4 remake is already in development and aims to be released in 2022, so it will of course be a next-gen title.  For me personally, I believe that Code Veronica is the game that perhaps is in need of a remake out of the two, but it’s a bold move to remake RE4, especially as I’ve already stated, it’s still a game that has aged remarkably well.  Not to mention that it’s a beloved entry in the series by so many fans, so it’s certainly a remake that will have to be nothing short of another “masterpiece”.  It should at the very least be interesting to see its new direction.
