ZeniMax Studio’s General Manager, Matt Firor has confirmed that the ambitious MMO The Elder Scrolls Online is now to be subscription-based.

Speaking to Gamestar, Firor spoke of the reasons why they’ve decided to change to a monthly subscription, rather than continue with the original free-to-play model.

“Charging a flat monthly (or subscription) fee means that we will offer players the game we set out to make, and the one that fans want to play”, said Firor, before adding. “Going with any other model meant that we would have to make sacrifices and changes we weren’t willing to make.”

Firor was keen to point out that once you purchase the game you’re given a free 30 days of play before you’re asked to pay this flat subscription of $14.99 a month, and hinted towards there being discounts and special offers and such to be announced in the future.

What are your thoughts on this? Are you happy to pay a monthly subscription for a game that was a free-to-play model, when there are other games on the market that have kept their free-to-play promises? Let us know.
