A trailer revealing the release date for the story driven The Old City has been made available. The Old City is touted as combining the meandering, ambiguous narrative of Dear Esther, the multi-linear structure of Gone Home, and the unfathomable, warping environment of The Stanley Parable”. The game is set in the outskirts of an abandoned metropolis, and sees players exploring the land and uncovering the history of the city. PostMod Softworks are forgoing what they describe as “esoteric puzzles and repetitive gameplay loops of traditional games” in favour of a more philosophical theme – i.e. there’s a lot of walking and ‘soaking in’ to do (apparently reading too, as there is a 30,000 word novella to uncover).

The game recently passed on Steam Greenlight, and the developer sounds quite ambitious and passionate about the project: “Our goal is to create a story that relies on your ability to explore, and in doing so we are exploring new topics in the gaming medium. Beyond this, we want to show that narrative and visuals alone can make a fantastic experience, and that they are not necessarily secondary to elements like gameplay. Games can be for whoever and about whatever, and our game is for people willing to discover and about how to exist with differing beliefs”.

Footage in the trailer certainly gives off an impression of good atmosphere, but also quite a dark setting – looks slightly like a horror title – and it looks like there will be some really interesting environments to explore. The game is apparently around five hours long, and is the first part of a larger story. The Old City is due for release on PC on 1st December.
