Project-Morpheus2

As you all know, the light bar feature of DualShock 4 has been a very hot topic recently, with the fanbase either loving it, or hating it. Well, it turns out that there was something very specific in mind about those lights when they were implemented. You see, the DualShock 4’s light bar was especially made in order to work with Project Morpheus. For those of you that do not know, Project Morpheus is Sony’s version to the now Facebook owned, Oculus Rift.

Speaking with Techradar on an interview, SCEE Senior Designer Jed Ashforth revealed the details above, saying, “The tracking light… it was our department that said we need that on. When all these things were coming out six months ago and everyone was going ‘it’s reflecting in my TV,’ we were going ‘oh no’ because we couldn’t tell anyone what it was for.

I don’t personally mind the lights on the controllers, especially more so after the recent update which allows users to dim their controller’s light effects, potentially extended the DualShock 4’s battery life in the process. Furthermore, when used in an innovative manner, they have some really neat effects in some games like inFAMOUS: Second Son and Killzone: Shadow Fall.
