The next update for Red Dead Online beta arrives next week on Tuesday, February 26th.  It will bring new modes, weapons, gear, bonus XP and more, as well as various general improvements and balancing tweaks.

For starters, we’ll be getting a new mode called Fool’s Gold Free Roam Event.  What this will involve is that players will compete to wear the Golden Armour, and then players will attack in the hope of obtaining the armour for themselves.  Both players wearing or not wearing the armour will earn points for kills in the hope of winning the game.

Other modes include the Showdown modes, where teams must compete against one another to capture and deliver bags to your designated zone to earn points.  Players can also steal loot from each other during the match.  The other two modes are called Up in Smoke and Spoils of War & Plunder, but further details on those modes will be released by Rockstar at a later date.

Also, PS4 players will be getting some early access content, namely the Open Target Races, where players will compete against one another in an open-space with the aim of getting as many kills, while on horseback as possible.  The player with the most horseback kills wins the game.  The second piece of early access content is the Jawbone Knife, which is a weapon that features “a handle artfully carved from the remains of a slain animal’s jaw”.  Finally the PS4 early access content also includes a new range of clothing and three new emotes.

New competitive challenges will also be coming to the open-world, such as Fishing Challenges.  Each Fishing Challenge will be divided by type and the participating player will be provided with all the resources needed, such as specific bait for that specific challenge, then you head to the pond, river or lake in question to catch that fish.  The player must catch the heaviest fish to win the challenge, and if you’re concerned that some annoying online players will be in attendance to spoil your activities, then fear not, because Rockstar say that “you’ll be made safe from the nuisance of trigger-happy outlaws”.

The new weapons include the Evans Repeater rifle and the D. D. Packenbush, a double-barrelled longarm shotgun.  Both weapons will be available to purchase via the Wheeler & Rawson Catalogue and local Gunsmiths.  The new clothing includes the “snake adorned” Diamondback Hat, as well as new outfits, jackets, boots, coats, gloves, hats and much more.  They’ll also be a variety of new emotes on the way too.  Additionally, for the next week, you can earn 20% more XP in all Red Dead Online activities.

Finally, if for whatever reason you’re yet to play the brilliant Red Dead Redemption 2, find out why you should by reading our review here.
