Finally, you will be able to use an external hard drive to save games and data for you PlayStation 4 console, a feature that has been available for Xbox One for quite some time already.  So this is a more then overdue feature that fans have long been calling for.   Those selected in the beta for system software update 4.50, will be able to take advantage of this new feature right now, as well as many improvements.

As long as you have a USB 3.0 external HDD, you will be able to use storage devices of up to 8TB in size for you game downloads, saves, apps and add-ons.  I have a 2TB hard drive in my PS4 console, but due to big game install file sizes, even I have to constantly juggle what to keep and what to delete.  But now I can finally put that 1TB external hard drive that I has been lying around to good use.

Other new additions included in this update will be the ability to use custom wallpapers on the PS4 dashboard, so you can make the most out of your favourite screenshots taken with the Share button.  Improvements will also be made to the Quick menu with it taking up less of the screen and you’ll be able to create and join parties on the fly that little more easily.

Taking influence from social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, you’ll be able to update your PlayStation Network activity feed by telling your friends what you’re up to and what games you’re playing by tagging them, showing-off screenshots and more.

That is not all however, because those with a 3D HDTV and a PSVR, you’ll be in for an extra treat with added support by allowing you to watch your favourite 3D Blu-ray movies while utilising the PSVR headset.

You can find out further details on system software 4.50 over on the PlayStation Blog and hopefully once the beta stage is over, this update should roll out to everyone else around the end of this month.  Now Sony, please, please, let us changes our PSN ID’s, even if it’s a one-time deal (and paid for after the initial name change).
