I think if i had to chose the biggest gaming success story of the last decade, I’d definitely have to go with Monster Hunter. Starting off as an obscure PS2 title that relied heavily on the consoles awkward online component, it eventually found new life on the PSP where it faced a sudden explosion in popularity that turned it into one of the most popular franchises in gaming history. It wouldn’t even be too far of a stretch to say that it’s entirely responsible for the PSP’s continued success in japan despite worldwide interest in the platform being at an all time low.

With such a strong following like that,  it’s a surprise it’s taken the series so long to reach Japan’s other massively popular portable gaming platform: the mobile phone. An issue that’s soon to be rectified this June by Capcom’s Monster Hunter: Dynamic Hunting for the iPhone*!

While on paper it sounds like a really cool idea to bring Monster Hunter to smartphones, turns out that it’s not really that exiting in reality. Judging by the attached video Dynamic Hunting looks to be more of a minigame that borrows a few art assets and ideas from the series rather than being a fully fledged iPhone/Pad entry in the franchise (Note to Capcom: GET ON THAT!).

Gameplay seems to revolve around 1 on 1 fights where the player has almost no control over their characters movement, instead their attention is focused on using various swiping gestures to perform sword strokes and dodge roll/blocking maneuvers with the correct timing. Such mechanics make the game curiously similar to Chair’s iOS smash hit Infinity Blade, which I’m sure is nothing more than a funny little coincidence.

*Crazy Japanese trivia corner time: This is actually a very weird choice of platform as, in the polar opposite to to the rest of the world, the iPhone has long been considered by a majority of Japanese punters to be an ugly undesirable product, to the point where they used to be given out for free on many contract deals. The more you know!
