Career

The single player career mode isn’t as strong contender to other kart racers our there. When entering your first few imageracers you will notice how over powered the A.I racers are. They seriously do not let up and its a desperate struggle to come into the top 3. Some of the tracks cause issues since there not that constant and has a major learning curve to get around the race tracks and A.I racers. During the career you will have to work you way up the ladder by defeating 9 different ‘Rivals’ to go complete the career by defeating them at a race.  This isn’t original as we have seen it in previous racing titles such as the Need For Speed franchise.

During the career mode we can really say this isn’t a Mario Kart look a like due to the fact its to frustrating and the lack of content. Even though the career  isn’t very creative there is oneimage  part of the career that kept me playing. This was due to the Destruction levels. It’s similar to Mario Karts balloon race, you just have to shoot enemies to gain more time and score point whilst you are racing against the clock to knock out the other racers.  It’s fun due to the fact your goal is to be destructive to the other racers. Overall there are only 3 different types of races ‘Race, Destruction and One-On-One’. The single player seriously lacks content and doesn’t hold enough reason to keep playing other than the trophies/achievements.

image Gameplay
The gameplay it self has many issues and this actually surprises us since the beta was quiet fun. The gameplayimage still has its main focus on the power-ups. There are 8 different types of power ups  including ‘The Shunt, Nitro, Mine, Barge, Bolt, Shield, Repair, Shock’ all the power-ups are pretty self explanatory . The power-ups do make an massive impact on the game since the gameplay since the game doesn’t hold strong as a racing game and isn’t well built. By this I mean it actually doesn’t feel like a racing game due too its slow pace. The cars don’t seem realistic enough to how Bizarre were presenting it to be a “Realistic Kart Racer”.

The controlling is terrible especially with drifting. Drifting is one method in the game that really ruins the experience. Its so hard to pull of a perfect drift and hard to judge when to start drifting. If you end up doing a ‘burnout’ drift then expect it to mess up your position. The cars actually have really bad handling and this can still be seen further into the game.  To react with the controller and the defeat the handling curve of the cars is struggling.

There is a few gameplay elements which are unique and make it bearable to play is being rewarded on certain  imagethings in the race.  Every race you are marked on ‘Lights and Fans’. The better you do in the race such as coming 1st will gain you more fans and light to unlock more races, cars, tiers etc. Fans actually make something to strive for since the more things you do in a race such as using certain power-ups gain you more fans. You can also gain more lights depending on the level of fans you receive.

Multiplayer

The multiplayer is probably the best thing about Blur. Racing online against 20 other people is hectic but you choose racing in a 10 player race and is a much better experience than the single player but still has its flaws. .  The online multiplayer allows you to do competitive team racing. Again the lack of content is there with game modes but both of which are provided hold strong. Online multiplayer can gain you unique mod’s to customize online.   Blur’s split screen is actually one of the best racing titles to use the split screen. The split screen runs at a consistent frame rate and is a great multiplayer experience.

Design
The scenery during the race’s looks nothing like Bizarre’s PGR franchise. We understand that they wanted to give the game a unique look so players didn’t feel it was another spin off. The scenery looks very bland and basic, The main focus on the design element as you can tell is the cars which do look pretty stunning but together the design of the whole game is a bit basic against its competitors.  The power-up effects also are nice to see and actually is probably the only good part of the design this the graphical content is poor other than as I stated before the cars.

Overall – 2.5/5 – Push-Start Recommended For Rental

Sadly Blur is a Blur… Blur isn’t going to go down in history as the best racing title and isn’t a strong competitor against the other racing tittles that are out.  Blurs unlockable content is a nice feature, but Blur is the sort of racing title that you could play for about an hour before realising there’s not a lot to Blur. If your looking for a racer that has weapons and power ups your best bet is sticking to Modnation Racers or Split/Second.
