Golf is a game of patience. A majestic game played by very serious people that use sticks to knock tiny balls in to holes. It has had its fair share of fun videogames in the past, but there’s a new offering in town. An offering that comes with PlayStation VR support. That game is 100ft Robot Golf.

If your issue with golf has always been that it is played by humans on a small scale then 100ft Robot Golf makes amends to that by making you a giant robot. There’s a selection of golfers to choose from, each with their own quirks to get used to. Some are easier to control than others, but all have the same goal. To get their golf ball in to the hole.

You can do this in various ways, one being the traditional golf way of hitting the ball the least amount of times into the hole. The other is to get it into the hole as quickly as possible. If you see a building in your way then don’t worry, just walk up to it and smash it out of the way. When you’re playing the game against other robots it all becomes a bit more frantic and you’ll no doubt hear various swear words being spouted as you over hit yet another shot. Why are you so terrible at this? STOP LANDING IN THE BUNKER BRETT! *ahem*

The other robots you play against will most likely be the computer or local multiplayer opponents. There is an online option, but the community seems nonexistent right now. I tried on different days to connect for five minutes at a time and failed to find people each time. There’s still enough to do to keep you entertained outside of online though, the main thing being the campaign mode.

The story of the game is told in the over the top style of an 80’s cartoon. It has some great moments of dialogue, but the animation is fairly static in an almost visual novel style. Luckily the character design is wonderful, which definitely makes up for some of the games graphical shortcomings. There’s a nice variety to the robot pilots, so much so that one of the robots is piloted by five dogs, just to really amp up the diversity.

The antics of these pilots are commentated on by the McElroy Brothers, who compliment the ridiculousness of the game well. After a few rounds you will start to hear some lines repeated, but there are some really good jokes in there. So much so you’ll be wishing normal golf had the McElroy Brothers doing commentary for it.

If you fancy getting into the mindset of being a 100ft robot pilot and you have a PlayStation VR headset, then you’re in luck. The game supports the headset and adds to the experience for the better. Your view is slightly above your robot and feels great. I didn’t encounter any motion sickness and the cut-scenes in the campaign mode, which absorb you much more due to their theatre set up. You sit in space and having the screen in front of you just looks and feels really nice as you look at the stars around you.

The animation may be far from the slickest and the game is definitely more fun when against others, but there’s plenty that 100ft Robot Golf does right. The fact it allows you to play it on PlayStation VR or on a normal screen is great and there’s a charm to its goofy style. It’s a shame the online community seems non-existent on PlayStation 4, but hopefully this is something that changes eventually. If you’re a fan of golf and/or giant robots then 100ft Robot Golf could be a great way to spend some time.

You can watch me play a bit of 100ft Robot Golf, without the VR headset, below.
