Mario and Luigi (and Baby Yoshis too!) at Nintendo E3

Nintendo’s E3 conference 2012 has offered a plethora of content for Mario fans. For the upcoming Wii U, Nintendo have introduced New Super Mario Bros. U, sequel to the fantastic New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which looks as accessible as Mario has ever been in his classic side-scrolling platforming style but with brand new added features, including a flying squirrel power-up which allows Mario to fly; pink eggs that hatch into adorable baby Yoshis that inflate like balloons to help Mario fly; new enemies (such as an angry looking dragon in an underwater level) and features employing the Wii U’s unique capabilities (for example, using the game pad to place helpful blocks in the level or being able to chat real-time with other players with the new Miiverse feature). It appears that, as with the previous title, up to four players can join in the fun in New Super Mario Bros. U.

If you ever needed a reason to buy a 3DS, there are three fantastic ones as Nintendo show off more new titles:

New Super Mario Bros. 2, a side-scrolling sequel to the smash hit DS title New Super Mario Bros. seems to be going for gold as coins pour from every corner of the levels, and a flower offers a metallic gold Mario power-up. The Tanooki suit looks to make an appearance also. It will be available in the US on August 19th 2012.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star is a new addition to the Paper Mario world, which – as the title suggests – employs stickers to add more depth to the game, which can be pulled off walls and become weapons (such as a hammer sticker) or can be used to help discover hidden places and items. Paper Mario: Sticker Star is due in the holiday season.

Whilst not much new was shown, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon – sequel to the GameCube hit Luigi’s Mansion – was demonstrated, showing off the games’ more difficult puzzles and was described as having a heavier emphasis on ghost-catching action as well as including new ghosts that require very particular strategies for defeating. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon is also due this holiday season.

In the upcoming Wii U theme-park inspired title Nintendo Land, Nintendo have shown more love for the green-clad plumber as Luigi gains his own mini-game: Luigi’s Ghost Mansion: Haunting Hijinks. Up to four players, their Miis dressed as Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi, will be pursued by an invisible ghost (also a player, using the Wii U game pad – all four human players will be visible to them), only knowing when the ghost is near with a rumble of their Wiimote controller. Players will defeat the ghost by using the torches to damage it.
