The masterminds behind Nintendo have been working on another handheld DS. I can’t even count how many different DS’s there are but a 3D one? Now that sounds pretty cool.

Nintendo announced today a new version of the DS console which will support 3D games. The 3DS will play games with 3D effects “without the need for any special glasses”, according to Nintendo and It will launch this year, between April 2010 and March 2011.

Earlier this year, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said a new DS would feature a “high level of visual quality,” as well as sensors to read a player’s movements. However, he has also been dismissive of existing 3D technology, saying,”I have doubts whether people will be wearing glasses to play games at home. How is that going to look to other people?”

If you are worried that the 3DS wont be able to play your Ds/DSi titles then you’re in luck because Nintendo have confirmed that it will have the ability to play previous DS titles.  The 3DS is currently the temporary project name from Nintendo but we will find out more information and details on the handheld at E3 this year.

I remember back when the first “fat” DS launched. I got Mario 64 & Rayman for the DS and my dear Nan bought me Ashphalt. If the majority of you didn’t know that the original nice and bulky “fat” DS launched in 2005. The DS lite then followed in 2006 (I currently own this one myself) and then the DSi 2008 and now the DSi XL. When the “3DS” launches it will be the 5th DS to hit the market!

Seems like 3D gaming is the way forward and technology is rapidly growing. Now Project Natal 2 is also rumoured before the first one is released. Back in my day we were lucky to get one console for 5 years and accessories like the Nintendo Glove and Duck hunt revolutionized my world… I assume by next week we will be controlled by robots? Who knows!

I like the name they have “3DS” is pretty clever. But without the need of any glasses is interesting.

haha yeh, would be scary if they made an updated resident evil game for the ds especially for the 3d…would be rather extreme lol

I think it is revolutionary idea for the hand held! imagine sitting on a train whilst playing Zelda or Mario with 3d effects coming out of your DS!
