10 Years of DLC Support for Dragon Quest X?

Square-Enix have committed to updating their new MMO every ten weeks, for the next ten years, Japanese newspaper Nikkei (via Andriasung) claims. As Andriasung goes on to address however, Producer Yosuke Saito is yet to confirm this decade-long support schedule.

It would certainly be a bold move from Square-Enix, given the unequivocal failure of their most recent foray online, Final Fantasy XIV (an overhauled version is set to drop early next year to right that particular wrong.)

That being said, in the single player space, Dragon Quest has, on the whole, performed far more consistently than Final Fantasy, delivering generally high-quality titles. If any popular JRPG is to survive the transformation to MMO, Dragon Quest is a likely contender. It has always benefited from a fundamentally basic battle setup, the ‘tactics’ system (post IV) adding a lot of the nuance. Working as a precursor to Final Fantasy XII‘s gambit system, ‘tactics’ allowed the player to control AI combat paradigms, not dissimilar from those found in modern MMOs.

On paper then, it seems Dragon Quest X may deserve the extraordinary amount of promised support. It’s certainly great to see Square-Enix eager to avoid mistakes of the past but one can’t help but wonder whether they’re setting themselves up for another fall.

Dragon Quest X launched in Japan on the Wii three days ago, with plans for a Wii-U version to follow. Its flight to Blighty is yet to be confirmed.
