GamesIndustry, who spoke to developers currently working on the new Nintendo console Wii U, have received mixed reviews in regards to its capabilities. The responses confirm fears that the Wii U isn’t as powerful as the current generation of consoles.

Under the rule of strict confidentiality, one developed confirms a lack of power in the system, “No, it’s not up to the same level as the PS3 or the 360, the graphics are just not as powerful.”

A developer at a ‘major company’ claims that the lack of power is a double edged skyward-sword, “There aren’t as many shaders, it’s not as capable. Sure, some things are better, mostly as a result of it being a more modern design. But overall the Wii U just can’t quite keep up.”

On the other hand some industry employee’s are championing the console, Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford, currently working on Aliens: Colonial Marines is in favour of the system claiming that “no other platform can do what the Wii U can do.” This comment would be in relation to the new system’s touch screen interface.

Although sounding like a monstrous negative selling point for the Wii U, Nintendo are no strangers to this situation. The believed to be low-powered Wii U console, follows in the similar footprints of the original Wii. The recent console success Nintendo has achieved is basically down to supplying an affordable console with a unique selling point at the correct market, resulting in selling a huge amount of units. The success of the Wii was incredible but with new consoles by Xbox and PlayStation to be confirmed in the foreseeable future, will they be able to repeat the feat for a second time?

I just can’t swallow this. If the source could reveal who they were then I would be catious, but hiding their identity while other developers (who have revealed themselves and are working on the system) have said the opposite? Unless this person reveals him or herself I would chalk this up to a rumor and one that doesn’t have a lot of support to prove it. Can’t wait for E3 when most of our questions will be answered.
