It seems to be fashionable these days to bring back old games that had a cult following. SOS: The Final Escape is one of the finest examples of a game with such a cult following, and one that could probably find a much stronger audience these days. It’s a game where you try to survive the aftermath of a natural disaster and the main horror comes from the world around you, whilst you try to help rescue others.

Known as Disaster Report in America, the game saw two sequels that unfortunately never saw a release in the UK. The second game, Raw Danger, was not released due to worries about some of the story arcs that presented themselves in the game. The PSP only third instalment (Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 3) never even saw a release outside of Japan.

The creator of the series purchased the rights to the IP last year with his new company Granzella. In fact they are releasing the previous 3 games on Japanese PSN, with the 3rd game obtaining a PS Vita release this month (here’s to hoping we see a western release at some point).

It’s not just rereleasing the old games though. The company have shown off screenshots of a new instalment and announced it will be revealing further information this Autumn. Whether it will be a handheld or home console release is not yet known. A fourth game was in the works on PS3, but was cancelled in 2011, understandably, due to the fallout of the Japanese earthquakes. If the game was to get released in the UK it would be the first instalment of the series here since 2003. Fingers crossed it gets a Western release.
