Namco Bandai’s Tales series has had an interesting relationship with the west – despite being consistently decent Japanese role-playing games, not every title manages to hop continents. Tales of Xillia was released in September 2011 and received critical acclaim (Fatismu magazine awarded it a 39/40) however this, and its financial success was not enough to see it translated like its older siblings, Tales of Graces, Vesperia and Symphonia.

Given this, it’s interesting that this title has been awarded a direct sequel, a phenomenon only occurring one other time within the franchise. It was announced via Andriasang that in winter 2012, Tales of Xillia 2 will be hitting the Japanese Playstation 3, continuing the story a year after past events. Not much specific information has been released other than this disconcertingly vague and familiar description: “RPG Where Your Choices Weave the Future.” In spite of this, it’s highly likely this new JRPG will be a contender within the field and hopefully provide a recently lacking genre with some distinctive quality.

Let’s hope then that this show of faith in Xillia reinvigorates the possibility of a western port.
