Square Enix’s CEO; Yoichi Wada has announced that there will be “No Final Fantasy VII remake until the original has been surpassed”. A very bold answer but this quote has got a lot of fans’ questions circulating around the net.

Fans continued to ask Square-Enix for the remake, but now producer/designer Tetsuya Nomura has clearly stated his opinion: that Square-Enix’s upcoming titles take priority over remaking a fifteen-year-old RPG. Square-Enix CEO Yoichi Wada laid down his foundation on when we could see a Final Fantasy VII remake, saying that we wouldn’t see the game remade until a Final Fantasy game was made that surpassed Final Fantasy VII in quality. Wada went on further to say that if a FFVII remake were made, the Final Fantasy franchise would be done with.

The series had several spin-off games such as ‘Crisis Core‘, ‘Dirge of Cerberus‘ and the CGI film ‘Advent Children‘ which was released in 2005 that got fans spreading the rumour of a remake.

Planning sessions for Final Fantasy VII began in 1994 after the release of Final Fantasy VI. At the time, the game was planned to be another 2D project for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Development of Final Fantasy VII resumed in late 1995 due to complications in the story, and required the efforts of approximately 120 artists and programmers, using PowerAnimator and Softimage|3D software. It was the most expensive video game in its time, with a budget of around US$45 million, equivalent to $64 million in 2012. (added inflation).

So you can understand both the thought and effort that was put into the game. I wouldn’t mind waiting for this remake, but not that long as fans surely are getting a bit restless, but I’m not the one who should judge.  Final Fantasy VII was both a critical and commercial success, and set several sales records. Within three days of its release in Japan, the game had sold 2.3 million copies. Final Fantasy VII had sold over 9.8 million copies worldwide including Final Fantasy VII International as of December 2005, making it the highest-selling Final Fantasy title. Global Total as of 16th Jun 2012 (units): 9.72m (via VGChartz)
