Devil May Cry HD Collection Coming

HD re-releases of games are becoming increasingly more common. Its a good bet that if something has a new sequel coming out soon or was a trilogy last generation it’ll get a shiny collection in this one.  After trying its hand at releasing two Resident Evil games separately Capcom is falling in line with its first foray into an actual disc-based collection with the recently announced Devil May Cry HD Collection for both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

Obviously the first three games in the series will be included (complete with achievement/trophy support) but just like Konami is doing with Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, the version of DMC3 on the disc will be the subsequently re-released special edition of the game, which included extra bonus content, such as the “Bloody Palace Mode” (The hack and slash precursor to horde modes, where you would have to fight against waves of increasingly difficult enemies up 9999 floors) as well as the tantalising ability to play as Dante’s brother Vergil.

The original Devil May Cry still holds up as a classic action horror game, with a very distinctly Capcom flavour (scripting and voice acting being simultaneously awful and charming as it was with the original Resident Evils), and while many dismiss the second game I feel it gets a somewhat harsh reputation, although is still the black sheep of the disc. The third game, however, will probably sell this collection on its own as it is oft still regarded as one of the finest action games ever made, with its perfectly brutal difficulty and deceptively complex battle system. The fact its the special edition is the icing on an already delicious package.
This is one series of games I’ll definitely be purchasing again.

Devil May Cry HD Collection is set for release “Early 2012”, rating “TBC”
