Injustice: Gods Among Us Story Trailer Emerges

NetherRealm have released a brand new trailer for the upcoming Injustice: Gods Among Us which allows us a sneak peek into what the game’s Story Mode will have to offer. Given their success with making a fighting game weave at least some sort of inspiration for fisticuffs in the Mortal Kombat reboot, rather good things are expected from the undoubtedly more varied and interesting characters offered by the DC Comics universe.

The trailer focuses on the major players such as Joker, Batman, Superman and Wonderwoman, but also features some slightly lesser known DC faces such as Doomsday, Raven and Sinestro. It suggests hostility between heroes, villains and military forces, all jostling for position on the streets of Gotham, Metropolis and several other famous DC locations. It’s interspersed with gameplay footage that still looks tightly weaved to the Mortal Kombat engine. Given that the engine itself only had some very minor issues, this is positive to see. Cutscenes seem to be rendered with the in-game engine, so the transitions from storytelling to combat will mainly be seamless. This allows the narrative and gameplay elements an integrated flow which boosts the immersive capabilities of the experience at hand.

IGN have had a hands on with the Story mode. They report that there will also be small minigames in some cutscene animations, mainly of the Quick Time Event category. They also revealed a few intriguing new features for the final product. First of these is a ‘Street Fighter Input Mode’ – my name, not theirs – whereby the signature Mortal Kombat jerky down to forward motions can be replaced with smoother quarter circles. This should greatly aid the breed of player that grew up on Capcom fighting games. They also revealed an online training mode, a feature that is soon to become a staple of fighting games, which allows players to test combos and setups with another human anywhere in the world.

Injustice: Gods Among Us is due on the 19th of April on Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U. Watch the trailer below.
