The next console from Microsoft may not have a disc drive. An insider source told MCV that the console will use “some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage.”

It is unknown whether the format will be a common one such as SD, or a proprietary one like those used by Sony’s Vita or Nintendo’s 3DS. However, it is more likely to be the latter, to make it harder to copy games.

The source also suggested that the next Xbox will be released sometime next year, fitting in line with previous talk of a possible reveal at Microsoft’s E3 2012 Press Conference.

Going without a disc drive could significantly affect the console at retail, since stores would only be stocking the system and digital goods. While this would allow a more streamlined connection between Microsoft and the user, it would no doubt require all consoles to be constantly connected to the internet.

While Nintendo’s Wii U will be sporting a disc drive, Sony is still remaining tight lipped over their next system. Time will tell, but the next generation could be the turning point for digital distribution.
