Capcom has revealed the first glimpse of gameplay footage for the highly anticipated Resident Evil 6 during Microsoft’s E3 conference, and it seems that it has taken a clear cue from this year’s Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. The pace feels faster, smoother and tighter than previous main series’ installments Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5. It seems to improve on Resident Evil 5’s cover system, introduce new finishing moves and – at long last – bring back rotting zombies in a new main title.

Perhaps one of the more controversial moves is the shift into this faster-paced Resident Evil experiences, particularly with the modern cinematic twist (seen in the gameplay footage in as Leon and Helena run for their lives from the blasts of an explosion). Whilst Resident Evil has always been influenced by film (the original was inspired by George A. Romero’s original Dead trilogy and as a response to Lucio Fulci’s film Zombie, which Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami hated), the scene seems to be full of quick-time events and fast shooting battles which pulls away further from the terrifyingly slower pace that made the previous Resident Evil games so special. What made an impact was the scarcity of ammo, strategic placing of enemies and the challenging puzzles, but this unique mix seems to be disappearing from the series more and more. It seemed in the first trailers of this game that Leon S. Kennedy’s campaign would feel more traditional and Chris Redfield’s campaign would feel more modern. This scene feels more action-oriented, but we can hope to be proved wrong and to be terrified once more as more gameplay trailers are revealed – this was only one small snippet of what will hopefully be the revival of the horror game genre.

A new trailer – nearly four minutes long – reveals more about the story of the game, and so far the new disaster looks to be one of the toughest challenges yet for our heroes:
