The Taken King PvP opens to all Destiny Players next week

Bungie and Activison have announced that all Destiny players will have access to The Taken King PvP modes and maps next week.  Called The Crucible Public Event, it will take place from September 8th, right on through to September 14th (the day before The Taken King proper releases).

During the open event, players will be able to sample the two new modes Rift and Mayhem, as well as the eight new maps, without the need to purchase the expansion.  Obviously when The Taken King releases on September 15th, all its content will be locked for those that have purchased the expansion.  However, you won’t be able to sample the new Super abilities during the open event, as to do so; you need to visit your class Vanguard within The Taken King to unlock the new subclass.

You can watch The Crucible Public Event trailer above to see what’s in store for all Destiny players next week.

Also next week will see the release of the big update 2.0 for Destiny (regardless of whether you own The Taken King or not), which weighs in at 18GB for PS4 and Xbox One, 20GB for PS3 (reduces down to 10GB once downloaded and installed)and 10GB for Xbox 360.

Notes courtesy of Eurogamer, below is what update 2.0 will bring:

  • Old news (but let’s recap with this first as its arguably the most important),the level cap will raise for 34 to 40. Levelling up will now be done by XP alone, as level and light now remain separate. Based upon the gear in your inventory and vault, you character will be “grandfathered” into the highest possible Light Level.
  • Bounty slots will be increased to 16.
  • Attack and Defence ratings for armour and weapons will be converted to Destiny’s new systems for The Taken King; however power levels will remain the same.
  • Incomplete Year One bounties will be automatically abandoned; however incomplete Year One Exotic bounties will be automatically completed! So if you’re having trouble with that Thorn bounty, just leave it be until update 2.0 arrives.
  • Fallen and Wolf Hunt Patrols will be no more, so it might be an idea to kill them off and collect their loot chests for Treasure keys while you still have time.
  • Exotic armour and weapon blueprints will be added to the Tower, along with Emblems and Shaders being available near Eva Lavante, and ships over by Amanda Holliday.
  • The Elder Cipher will no longer drop from the Skolas Challenge Arena (Prison of Elders level 35), now the Exotics you’d buy with the Elder Cipher will drop at random from the Prison of Elders Treasure Chest. This reminds me, I need to get Skolas level 35 done!
  • The weapon balance will also be affected on September 8th, with many weapons such as Gjallarhorn and more being Nerfed. However, Auto-Rifles will be buffed, making them slightly more powerful.
  • Oh and don’t forget, we have until September 15th to get all our Year One “Moments of Triumph” milestones completed for that elusive emblem (Bungie has extended the deadline from the 8th).

On this past Wednesday, Bungie streamed the Court of Oryx from within the Dreadnaught for latest Destiny: the Taken King Twitch stream, if you missed it, you can find YouTube archive video below.

Destiny: The Taken King will release for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on September 15th.
