Capcom have revealed that their upcoming update to the Street Fighter IV franchise, Ultra Street Fighter IV, will include a new feature called Edition Select. This allows players to  select fighters from the multiple versions of all the games released in the Street Fighter IV series including the often criticised overpowered Sagat from the original Street Fighter IV.

The full list of titles you can select the characters from are as follows;

  • Street Fighter IV
  • Super Street Fighter IV
  • Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition
  • Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition Ver. 2012
  • Ultra Street Fighter 4.

Each edition had received upgrades or fighter rebalancing attributes which changed many peoples fighting styles as they upgraded to the newest edition. Now, players who preferred the first iteration of fighters can take on the newest rebalanced fighters from the later updates for the first time and truly see the differences between them.

This is certainly a first for a modern Capcom fighting game to feature such a mode. It will be interesting to see if competitive fighting tournaments accept this as a valid title or if the update is designed purely for home consoles as a little bit of fun. Either way it’ll certainly be intriguing to see just how differently the balance is between the earlier games to those released later in the games lifecycle.

This is all very interesting news for Street Fighter fans but we’re all still waiting to hear who the elusive final character is, and we’re seemingly no closer to that reveal. Is it a new character, a returning fighter from a previous game or another fighter from a rival title? We’ll hopefully know sooner rather than later.

Ultra Street Fighter 4 will launch in for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in June as a standalone title and a separate upgrade DLC version. The standalone version will cost around £29.99 / €39.99 / $39.99 while owners of Super Street Fighter 4 can upgrade to Ultra for £10.99 / €14.99 / $14.99 via DLC. A Windows PC version is expected to follow in August retailing at £19.99 / €29.99 / $29.99.
