6 Things I Want From Gears of War:Judgment

  • Intriguing and Well Delivered Story – We already know that this game is taking place 15 years before the events of the original trilogy. 1up has reported that each mission plays out as a case file and depending on the difficulty level that you play at, new information will be unveiled. The higher the difficulty the more you will learn, this is one of more interesting aspects of Judgment and definitely turns the table for narrative telling in games. As good as this sounds though, the Gears franchise isn’t best known for it’s story telling, but maybe with the combination of Epic Games and People Can Fly this can be turned around. It would be nice to see as well a deeper origin story of the Locust themselves, as we don’t really know much about them, apart from the fact that they live underground.
  • Dismemberment– From the looks of the extended trailer, there is a glimpse of Baird shooting a Boomshot causing the arm of a Boomer to explode (see image below). If this is the case then this could surely open more possibilities with the combat, imagine being able to shoot the legs of a Bloodmount causing it to stop in its tracks. Even better would be the use of it in multiplayer and the use of meat shields, shooting each body part away, true satisfaction right there.
  • More Retro Weapons – With the game taking place before the original trilogy, we know that weapons like the retro lancer were used in that era. It would be fantastic to see more weapons like this, that are necessarily high tech but still manage to pack a punch. With the brains of People Can Fly and Epic Games I’m more than certain this could happen, and while they’re at it throw as another weapon like the Cluckshot, but this time not as an Easter egg, it was too awesome to be limited.
  • Destructible Environments – Gears of War 2 showed signs of this, so I was kind of hoping that this would be improved on in the third instalment, but to my bitter disappointment it was the same. I don’t know what engine Judgment is running on, but even if it were the same (Unreal Technology 3) it would be great to see it became more of an integral part of the gameplay. With the newly announced S3 system, it sounds as though the game is really going to push your skill to the limit with enemies spawning all around you. It would be at least fair to have the advantage of forcing your enemies out of cover to give you a split second chance of a kill.
  • A Good Boss Fight – If any of you think that the previous Gears of War games had good boss fights, then clearly you have not played enough games. To put it simply they’re tedious and all revolve around game tactics that we have seen before. We are meant to believe that these foes are far more powerful and dangerous than we are, yet when we can kill them so easily with simply tactics, how are we supposed to feel outmatched?  With the second and fourth point I made, boss fights could truly be something to remember.
  • Same Multiplayer Goodness – The new game mode entitled “Overrun” so far looks very impressive and utilises the popular mode of Horde well, turning it in to a competitive game mode with 5 other players who play as Locust in the style of Beast mode. Each COG has special abilities unique to them and same with the Locust, look here for more details on that. My only worry is that each competitive mode will be based around a range of classes to pick from, falling in to the same routine as Call of Duty. I hope to be wrong on this as this is one aspect that makes the first three unique in their multiplayer offering, it’s all about skill. As I said though Overrun looks very impressive and I will be keeping my eye out on this. Oh yeah remember the shield the Mauler can use? Well now it has a spin attack.
